Overview
The Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M) presents, from 9 July to 10 September, this cycle which focuses on the presence of video within the two collections housed by the centre: the contemporary art collection of the Community of Madrid - Colección Museo CA2M - and the Fundación ARCO Collection. Through the various cycles that will take place during the exhibition period, visitors are invited to reflect on the moving image from different perspectives, highlighting the potential of the audiovisual medium as a space for artistic experimentation.
The proposed screening programmes are part of a series of practices that understand video as an activator of gazes, presences and narratives. The audiovisual device becomes a practice linked to the social and cultural contexts in which it emerges.
The first of these programmes is dedicated to animated video as one of the thematic axes present in the collection. It brings together nine works by the artists: Cristina Lucas, Vasava Artworks, Vicente Blanco, Paco Guillén, Marina Núñez, Lois Patiño, Leonor Serrano Rivas and Juan Zamora, whose practices explore drawing in motion from diverse perspectives.
The audiovisual medium thus establishes a dialogue between visual arts, cinema and animation, placing the selected works at the intersection of different languages that stem from drawing and expand towards artisanal animation, cinema, music, dance and set design.
Taking Émile Cohl's short film Fantasmagorie (1908)—considered the first film made entirely through animation and composed of more than seven hundred hand-drawn sketches—as a starting point, the Museo CA2M offers a space to discover the stroke, technique and creative processes that shape the language of animated drawing and its evolution within contemporary art.
