Although they play no role in the exterior appearance of the building, they can end up exposed to the public view in a permanent provisional state due to changes in urban planning regulations.

When this happens, it creates a landscape discontinuity, a break in the urban fabric that can cause serious structural and habitability problems for the affected and neighboring buildings, apart from the notable visual impact it has on public space.

Twenty-five years ago, with the aim of eliminating these urban discontinuities and creating new facades that integrate into the urban landscape, Barcelona's Party Wall Remodelling Plan was launched.

Within the framework of Barcelona's nomination as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2026, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Barcelona City Council are launching this international ideas competition to remodel ten party walls, distributed across the city's ten districts, with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy in Barcelona, and are calling on the global community of young architects to participate.

The competition jury selected a winning proposal for each of the sites, as well as a second and third prize, from among those submitted for each location.

The winning proposals will be implemented throughout 2026 as part of the activity programme and as a lasting material legacy of Barcelona 2026, UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture.
