The UB Historic Building is hosting an exhibition on the origins of modern architecture in Catalonia. The exhibition focuses on the former School of Architecture and dedicates a prominent space to Antoni Gaudí as part of the Gaudí Year.
On 16 April at 18:00, the Universitat de Barcelona is launching the exhibition Intramurs.
El bressol de l'arquitectura moderna a Catalunya (1872-1962), a project that recovers the memory of the former School of Architecture and its key role in the transformation of the city of Barcelona.
The exhibition has a unique value as it is located in the exact space where architecture studies were taught for almost a century, from the late 19th century until the 1960s.
This heritage environment, located in the UB Historic Building, still preserves emblematic spaces such as the library, the director's office and the faculty rooms, which are showcased through photographs, exhibition materials and guided tours.
Within the framework of the Gaudí Year, the exhibition pays special attention to the figure of Antoni Gaudí, who was a student at the School and graduated there in 1878.
His career, which is key to understanding modern architecture, exemplifies the influence of this institution on the development of Catalan and international architecture.
The exhibition tour delves into the origins of the School of Architecture, founded in 1871 under the direction of Elies Rogent, and traces almost a hundred years of history during which prominent figures such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch were trained, who were protagonists in shaping modern Barcelona.
Through documents, plans and photographs, the exhibition shows how Catalan architecture evolved in parallel with the urban and social growth of the city.
From the impetus of the Eixample to the major changes of the 20th century, the exhibition highlights the role of architecture as a tool for understanding and transforming urban reality. With Intramurs, the Universitat
