Overview
The Museo Casa de la Moneda is hosting this exhibition from 2 July to 30 May 2027, offering visitors the chance to discover a selection from the numismatic collection of the Instituto Valencia de Don Juan, one of the most significant in Spain. The display features gold, silver and billon coins minted from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, serving as historical documents that reflect the political evolution of various territories.
Located on the second floor of the museum, this selection of pieces allows visitors to contemplate the development of coinage in the Christian Hispanic kingdoms, from the Carolingians to Ferdinand VII. Guillermo de Osma and Adela Crooke, the creators of the collection, understood that coins are historical documents and primary sources witnessing the political evolution of different territories, which is why they sought to preserve pieces from diverse places to prevent their destruction or removal from Spain.
The exhibition is structured across three rooms. In the first, visitors can view the development of gold and silver currency from the western area of the Iberian Peninsula from the 12th century until the beginning of the Catholic Monarchs.
The second room follows the recovery of Christian coinage in the eastern area of the Peninsula thanks to the Carolingians and their dominion over the so-called Marca Hispánica, where currency was minted in numerous bishoprics and counties. At the end of the 11th century, the Kingdom of Aragon minted billon in Jaca, and in the 12th century the new Navarrese monarchs did the same. The evolution of various coins in the Crown of Aragon during the 12th century up to the end of the reign of Ferdinand the Catholic is also traced.
In the third room, visitors can observe Castilian gold and silver coins from the Catholic Monarchs (the basis of the subsequent system) up to the reign of Ferdinand VII, featuring coins issued during the Liberal Triennium, the absolutist period, and those of the monarch as King of Navarre, without forgetting the currency used to circulate in the newly discovered American continent.
