El flautista de Hamelin

The theatre company Teatro Tyl Tyl presents a version of the famous Brothers Grimm tale on Saturdays and Sundays, from 4 October to 1 November, at Teatro Fígaro, offering a fresh perspective on childhood, power and the relationship between the adult world and children.

The story begins in a city overrun by an infestation of rats that no one manages to stop. When the situation seems hopeless, a mysterious piper arrives in Hamelin and, with a hypnotic melody, makes the plague disappear. But the inhabitants' relief is short-lived. When the time comes to fulfil the promise and pay the piper for his work, the city refuses. The musician then plays his instrument once again and, this time, those who follow his music are not the rats, but the children of Hamelin.

Building upon this well-known episode, the production, directed by Daniel Lovecchio, introduces a question that runs throughout the entire performance: was it revenge, justice or a form of liberation? The perspective thus shifts towards the children and towards what they can perceive and understand beyond the rules established by adults.

The separation between the children's and adults' worlds, symbolised by the confinement of the children in a cave, serves as a starting point to construct an alternative ending and explore what happens when the little ones cease to be mere spectators of adults' decisions.

Rather than a conventional adaptation of the tale, the work proposes a reflection on the relationship between art and childhood and on the need to listen to children's voices. The staging seeks to open a crack in those mechanisms that silence or limit their capacity to express themselves, turning theatre into a space for encounter and collective thought.
