Overview

Sala Mateo Inurria 2 of Fundación Canal is hosting an exhibition from 7 October to 5 January 2027 that brings together in the same space two complete series of 111 prints and lithographs dedicated by Gustave Doré and Robert Rauschenberg to the Inferno of the Divine Comedy.

In literature, few places have been represented as powerfully as Dante's Inferno. Its nine circles, populated by sin, the damned and disturbing landscapes, have inspired artists of all eras for centuries. Written in the early 14th century by the Italian philosopher and poet Dante Alighieri, it is the first of the three parts of the Divine Comedy, one of the great works of universal literature.

Curated by Lola Durán Úcar, the exhibition brings together for the first time the two complete series that Gustave Doré and Robert Rauschenberg dedicated to the Inferno. A total of 111 pieces produced nearly a century apart, showing how the same text can acquire different meanings depending on the era and the artistic language.

Doré's 76 19th-century woodcuts offer a dramatic, monumental and medieval-inspired vision, while Rauschenberg's 35 offset lithographs, created in the 1960s, present a fragmentary and contemporary interpretation, linking the Inferno to the conflicts and society of his time.

The exhibition thus invites visitors to journey through the nine circles of the Inferno and see how Dante's work, written more than seven hundred years ago, continues to inspire new interpretations and reflect the concerns of different generations.
