Exposició de varietats antifeixistes

L'Exposició de varietats antifeixistes is one of the central pillars of the Portabella: agent provocador programming.

It is a comprehensive and complex project that takes as its starting point Concert irregular (1968), a stage work that constituted the first joint creation by the triangle formed by Brossa, Portabella and the musician Carles Santos.

Concert irregular premiered at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence — on the occasion of Joan Miró's 75th birthday — and had a second performance at the Teatre Romea in Barcelona, constituting a quintessential work of both the aesthetic and political ruptures characteristic of the 1968 global uprisings.

The detailed observation of these two stagings — and a third carried out in New York the following year — which provoked highly contrasting reactions among the public and the media, allows us to reconsider various aspects of the problems currently faced by radical arts and critical cultural practices in a situation of polarised systemic crisis between the proliferation of emancipated subjects in revolt and the violent rise of supremacisms.

L'Exposició de les varietats antifeixistes takes this context as a frieze to work with contemporary artists who continue, today, the radical attitudes of creators such as Portabella, Brossa or Santos.

Thus, amidst the documentary contributions, contemporary works by artists such as Paula Artés, Mabel Palacín, Abel Jaramillo, Núria Güell or Daniela Ortiz take centre stage, some of the works having been produced expressly for this occasion.

The public programme, in the form of Concert de varietats antifeixistes, will be the third layer and, finally, a publication that, rather than a simple catalogue, will consist of a printed transposition of the set of previous experimentations, including numerous unpublished materials and articulated around an extensive critical text by Marcelo Expósito.
