XXXIII Ciclo de Lied - Christiane Karg

The Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) is inaugurating a new edition of its Lied cycle on 6 October at the Teatro de la Zarzuela. A recital starring soprano Christiane Karg and pianist Malcolm Martineau, who present Jugendstil Lieder / Belle Époque, a programme focusing on concert song from the early years of the 20th century.

In a period marked by post-romanticism and new aesthetic currents, pieces by Amy Beach, Debussy, Berg, Alma and Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss were a faithful reflection of the diverse paths taken by the lied and the mélodie around 1900. This recital proposes a journey through the different ways of understanding the relationship between poetry and music, offering an overview of a decisive moment for the evolution of the European vocal repertoire.

German opera soprano Christiane Karg made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2006, as Melia in Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus and as Weltgeist in his Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes. In 2007 she appeared there as Madame Silberklang in Der Schauspieldirektor and in the title role of Bastien und Bastienne.

Throughout her career she has been a member of the Frankfurt Opera, performing in works such as Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Puccini's La bohème or Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House in 2015 as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute.

She has performed as soprano soloist in Mahler's Second Symphony at a performance at the 2017 Rheingau Musik Festival in Eberbach Abbey under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, with Gerhild Romberger, SWR Vokalensemble, Bavarian Radio Choir and the SWR Symphony Orchestra.
