Richard Georg Strauss (Monaco di Baviera, 11 giugno 1864 – Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Baviera, 8 settembre 1949) è stato un eminente compositore e direttore d'orchestra tedesco, la cui lunga carriera attraversa il tardo romanticismo fino alla prima metà del XX secolo. È noto soprattutto per le sue opere liriche, i poemi sinfonici e i Lieder. Strauss, insieme a Gustav Mahler, rappresenta l'straordinaria fioritura tardiva del romanticismo germanico dopo Richard Wagner, in cui un elaborato e complesso sviluppo dell'orchestrazione si unisce a uno stile armonico avanzato. L'opera di Strauss ha influenzato in profondità lo sviluppo della musica del XX secolo.
