Overview
The South Hall of the Centro Cultural Conde Duque is hosting until 22 November 2026 an exhibition where an exceptional set of Spanish Baroque masterpieces, created by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Juan de Valdés Leal and Pedro Roldán for the Church of the Hospital of the Santa Caridad in Seville, can be seen for the first time in over three centuries and outside their original location.
The exhibition, organised to mark the restoration of both spaces, consists of fourteen unique pieces (ten oil paintings and four sculptures) that represent one of the high points of European Baroque art.
The collection exhibited here is one of the pinnacles of the Spanish Baroque. It was created in the 17th century following the iconographic programme devised by Miguel Mañara centred on the works of mercy, and each piece was created specifically for the Sevillian temple. Murillo's paintings (among them Saint John of God carrying a sick man, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary curing the ringworm-afflicted or Moses and the rock at Horeb and The multiplication of the loaves and the fishes) sit alongside the dramatic flair of large canvases by Valdés Leal, such as In ictu oculi and Finis gloriae mundi, and the sculptural mastery of Pedro Roldán in the Christ of Charity, Saint Roch and Saint George.
Produced in the second half of the 17th century, these works respond to the iconographic programme conceived by Miguel Mañara, elder brother of the Brotherhood of the Santa Caridad, revolving around the works of mercy.
This artistic treasure is on display in Madrid thanks to the collaboration of Afundación, Obra Social ABANCA with the Madrid City Council and the Brotherhood of the Santa Caridad itself.
