Judíos sefardíes y la formación de la independencia estadounidense

Exhibition at the Centro Sefarad-Israel in Madrid examining the role of Sephardic Jewish communities in the birth of the United States, focusing on merchants, translators, jurists and families.

The exhibition examines the role of Sephardic communities in the emergence and consolidation of the United States. Unlike narratives that prioritise battles and political leaders, the galleries focus on the everyday work of merchants, translators, jurists and entire families, whose ties spanned the Mediterranean, Europe, the Caribbean and North America.

During the American Revolution, a war of international scope in which Spain acted against Great Britain, these networks made possible the shipment of supplies, the securing of loans and the flow of information relevant to the policy of the young nation. The route also shows their involvement in defending rights that were pioneering for the time, among them freedom of conscience, equality before the law and the rule of law.

The University of Miami, the American Sephardi Federation and the Comunidad Judía Iberoamericana take part in its preparation. The exhibition comes to Madrid after first being shown at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York and is housed at the Centro Sefarad-Israel, on Calle Mayor.
