Overview

Espacio Fundación Telefónica is hosting from 29 May to 1 November, as part of the PHotoESPAÑA 2026 photography festival, an exhibition that brings together the complete series of The Americans, created during the journey that Robert Frank undertook across the United States in the mid-1950s.

Robert Frank (Zurich, Switzerland, 1924 – Nova Scotia, Canada, 2019), a pioneer in the renewal of photography as an artistic language, managed to change the way we look at the world through a camera. This exhibition represents a unique opportunity to rediscover one of the most influential photographic projects of the 20th century, which has already become a legendary statement about the United States and about photography itself.

This is the first time that the entire set of The Americans series has been shown in Spain, where 83 iconic images will be on display, which also make up the most important book in the history of photography, published in 1958. The images, which have been loaned by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, caused a great impact at the time due to their honesty and their ability to show what many preferred to ignore.

This exhibition, curated by David Campany, a prominent international expert on the figure of Robert Frank, also displays prints by Frank from the International Center of Photography in New York and from private collections. The exhibition thus allows visitors to revisit this emblematic project.
