American Images

The photography of Dana Lixenberg (Amsterdam, 1964) has achieved international recognition for her honest and committed approach to documentary portraiture.

Over more than three decades, she has developed a profoundly human body of work focused on the representation of marginalised communities, iconic figures of popular culture, and social landscapes laden with memory.

Her work, carried out mainly in the United States, is characterised by a refined aesthetic, an empathetic gaze, and a constant desire to avoid stereotypes.

"American Images" presents a deep look into contemporary American society through a selection of her most significant projects.

From the emblematic Imperial Courts, begun after the Los Angeles riots in 1992, to the portraits taken in Jeffersonville (Indiana) or Shishmaref (Alaska), Lixenberg has successfully captured the human essence in diverse and complex contexts.

Her portraits do not merely show faces, but tell stories about inequality, identity, and resilience. Check out more information about the "American Images" exhibition on the KBr Fundación Mapfre website. Last updated: 29/09/2026
