Duermen bajo las aguas

Playwright Sara Mérida adapts and directs a piece based on the novel of the same name by Carmen Kurtz, which revolves around the search for hope in times of pain and transformation. This production can be seen once again at the Teatro Español (Salón de los balcones - Andrea D'Odorico) as part of the new 26/27 season with performances from 8 to 25 October, Thursday to Sunday.

Featuring performances by actresses Rebeca Hernando and Ainara Orgaz, the play tells the story of Pilar, a young woman in early 20th-century Barcelona whose existence is irrevocably altered by the outbreak of war. Against this turbulent backdrop, Pilar is forced to mature at an accelerated pace, confronting the painful reality of an absent love and the constant presence of loss.

The piece delves into how this wartime context and the resulting uprooting awaken a formidable inner strength and mental fortitude within her, driving her to challenge and break away from the traditional roles imposed on women of her era. Furthermore, throughout the production, amidst uncertainty and suffering, friendship emerges as a fundamental pillar, offering her refuge and support.

Altogether, the production explores human resilience and the capacity to find hope even in the darkest of moments. Beneath the surface of pain and traumatic experiences, Pilar's memories and longings still survive and flourish, symbolising the persistence of her soul and the capacity of her spirit to press on despite adversity.
