Overview
José Recuenco directs a tribute to brave and forgotten women based on Rosa Montero's novel La carne. A play written by Laila Ripoll (Donde el bosque se espesa, Descarriadas or Una humilde propuesta with Silvia de Pé), which can be seen at the Gran Teatro Pavón on Saturdays from 12 September to 17 October.
This aforementioned play has won several awards, including the 20th Unión de Actores Award for Best Leading Theatre Actress, the MET Award for Best Breakthrough Play, Leading Actress, Adaptation and Scenography 2021, and it was a nominee for Best Actress at the 2022 Max Awards.
Its protagonist is Josefina, one of the characters from Montero's book. A tormented woman who could be Hildegard of Bingen, María Lejárraga or George Sand. Her destiny crosses paths on 3 November 1893 with the tragedy of the steamship Cabo Machichaco, the largest civil accident to have occurred in Spain in the 19th century, as its explosion caused around 590 deaths and 525 injuries.
From this event, Laila Ripoll gives rise to a monologue in which Josefina opens up to the audience, recounting her experiences and scrutinising the shadows to become a modern female myth.
