Las modistas

Claudia Puig Moysset writes and directs on Fridays from 25 September to 30 October a period comedy that revives the figures of the women who contributed to the development of the Catalan textile industry and whose work was largely relegated to anonymity.

The Fibracolor textile factory in Tordera becomes the setting for a story of ingenuity, friendship and perseverance set in the summer of 1962. The show follows Rosa, Julia, Catalina and Clara, four factory workers who receive an unexpected assignment that puts to the test their ability to find solutions to a challenge that initially seems impossible. Amid sewing machines, fabrics and long working hours, the protagonists must draw upon their ingenuity and creativity to demonstrate that talent does not depend on titles or labels.

Throughout the play, shared labour also gives way to conflicts, loves, secrets, arguments and decisions that end up transforming their lives. The piece thus combines humour with a more emotional perspective on the relationships between the four women and on the circumstances of an era marked by social and labour limitations.

In this way, a tribute is paid to those women who, from the workshops and factories, played a fundamental role in the Catalan textile industry without receiving any recognition for it. A tale led by ordinary people who, faced with an extraordinary situation, find in their resourcefulness and their ability to work together the way to confront the challenge.
