Órgia

The Sala José Luis Alonso at the Teatro de la Abadía hosts from 15 to 18 October the performance of a play by the Seville-based company La Rara, comprised of Rocío Hoces and Julia Moyano, authors and directors of the work, who also take part as actresses. This staging combines three temporal lines: the present recounting the past, the past itself, and the present composing the future.

Combining different theatrical languages and working with the Verbatim technique (a literal form of documentary theatre), supported by the expertise of Lucía Miranda, director of Cross Border, the company La Rara presents this theatrical work which received a special mention from the jury at the Palma del Río Theatre Fair in 2023.

The project stems from a period of artistic and documentary research supported by the Institute of Culture and Arts of Seville, under the Project Bank programme which focuses on mental health from a gender perspective. During this period, they conducted a series of interviews with the female workers who closed the Miraflores asylum in Seville in the 1980s.

Órgia, winner of the 2024 Lorca Award for Best Breakthrough Show from the Andalusian Academy of Arts, is an eclectic show that brings together stories of hijacked and battered lives of women who can no longer tell them, intimate accounts of those who lived through it and want to tell it, and a fairground of voices of women eager to be a body, a single one, and make it leap.

In ancient Greece, the word órgia referred to collective, ceremonial acts where a spiritual truth was to be revealed. And it is from this perspective, from the celebratory and the collective, that the title of this piece is created.
