Prerrafaelismo. Itinerarios femeninos

From 24 September to 10 January 2027, the Sala Recoletos of the Fundación MAPFRE presents an exhibition centred on the artistic movement of Pre-Raphaelitism, which arose in Great Britain in opposition to official academic art in the mid-19th century. The exhibition comprises a wide anthology of works produced by women artists who responded to this new style, which emerged in 1848 and remained in force until the early years of the 20th century.

Curated by Pamela Gerrish Nunn, the exhibition analyses the way in which Victorian society's women artists approached, adopted and adapted the potential of Pre-Raphaelitism from the disadvantaged position that society imposed upon them, as well as the different factors of their connection to the movement: their ties to certain male artists; their enthusiasm for John Ruskin, a prominent defender of Pre-Raphaelitism; or their independence of judgement and taste, among others.

The selected works range across various techniques, from oils, watercolours, drawings and prints to photographs, textiles, embroidery, enamels and stained glass, created by artists such as Elizabeth Siddal, Julia Margaret Cameron, Evelyn De Morgan, May Morris and Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, amongst others.
