Overview
Samara Joy debuted at our festival in 2022, at the Conservatori Liceu, at the head of a trio of French musicians.
She arrived in Barcelona for the first time with the guarantee of having won, in 2019, the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, and indeed she confirmed all expectations: a very young and powerful voice that was not afraid to hold indisputable references such as Vaughan herself, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae.
) makes her debut at the Palau at the head of a septet, and with six Grammy awards under her belt since that now distant 2022.
With her latest album, Portrait, she develops her artistry at the head of a septet and includes arrangements with her own lyrics (Charles Mingus) and music also by other references such as Sun Ra and her mentor Barry Harris.
A star is born, we told ourselves when her 2022 recital ended. It seems we didn't get our prediction terribly wrong…
