Richard Georg Strauss (Munich, 11 June 1864 – Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, 8 September 1949) was a prominent German composer and conductor whose long career spanned from the late Romantic period to the first half of the twentieth century. He is particularly known for his operas, tone poems and Lieder. Strauss, together with Gustav Mahler, represents the extraordinary late flowering of German Romanticism after Richard Wagner, in which an elaborate and complex development of orchestration is combined with an advanced harmonic style. Strauss's work profoundly influenced the development of twentieth-century music.
