About — The artist
Squeeze is an English rock band that became famous in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording through the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the United Kingdom, their singles “Cool for Cats”, “Up the Junction” and “Labelled with Love” were top ten hits. Less commercially present in the United States, Squeeze found success there with “Tempted”, “Black Coffee in Bed” and “Hourglass”, and the band was considered part of the Second British Invasion.
The vast majority of their songs are written by Chris Difford (lyrics) and Glenn Tilbrook (music), the band's guitarists and singers and its only constant members. The duo was hailed as “heirs to the throne of Lennon and McCartney” at the time of the band's initial popularity in the late 1970s. The band formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, before splitting again in 1999. The band, which has counted more than 30 musicians over the years through constant line-up changes, also served as a launching pad for the careers of its former keyboardists (sometimes singers) Jools Holland and Paul Carrack.
The band reformed for tours in the United States and the United Kingdom in 2007. In 2010, it released Spot the Difference, an album of new versions of old songs. The band's first album made up entirely of previously unreleased songs since 1998, Cradle to the Grave in 2015, became its highest-charting album of original material in the United Kingdom (excluding “greatest hits” compilations). The band continues to record and release music, notably The Knowledge (2017) and Trixies (2026), as well as to tour.
