Louis Daniel Armstrong, also known by the nickname Satchmo (from the English "satchel mouth": a bag-shaped mouth, for the great size of his mouth) or Pops (New Orleans, 4 August 1901 – New York, 6 July 1971), was an American trumpeter, singer and actor.
Armstrong was one of the most famous jazz musicians of the twentieth century. He first rose to fame as a trumpeter, then established himself as one of the most important jazz singers, also with the general public, especially towards the end of his career. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential figures in twentieth-century music, and his innovations allowed jazz to evolve and expand, helping to make it a genre celebrated throughout the world.
