About — The venue
The Deutsche Oper Berlin is the largest of the three opera houses in Berlin. The building at Bismarckstraße 34–37 in the Charlottenburg district opened in 1961 to designs by Fritz Bornemann in the style of postwar modernism, replacing the Deutsches Opernhaus that had previously stood on the same site. The latter had been built in 1912 to plans by Heinrich Seeling in the neoclassical style, was gutted by fire during the Second World War and was demolished afterwards. With 1,859 seats, the newly built Charlottenburg house is one of the largest opera houses in Germany.
Together with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Komische Oper, the Staatsballett and the Bühnenservice Berlin, the Deutsche Oper forms the Stiftung Oper in Berlin.
