Overview
The cantata Cerdà: la força de la civilització, with music by Albert Guinovart and libretto by Esteve Miralles, pays tribute to Ildefons Cerdà, founder of scientific urbanism. It highlights his rational and progressive vision, advocating a healthy, safe and inclusive city.
Although Barcelona's Eixample did not fully realise his project because of pressure from powerful vested interests, his legacy continues to inspire town planners around the world.
The cantata, structured in eight movements, symbolises the octagon that characterises his urban design. cat, a grant promoted by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Diputacions of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Last updated: 22/10/2026
