The Order of Santiago was established in the 12th century (around 1170) in the Kingdom of León. It was founded to defend Christians during the Reconquista and to protect pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela.
Named after and symbolised by Saint James the Apostle, patron saint of Spain and a central figure of medieval warrior mythology, the order originally combined military and religious activities, integrating protective efforts with a spiritual life.
