About — The artist

Radio Futura was a Spanish rock group of the 1980s and 1990s. Brought together in 1979, after a first album (Música moderna, 1980) of some note set within the so-called Movida madrileña, and after restructuring its line-up, they embarked on a successful career with a run of albums during the 1980s (La ley del desierto / La ley del mar, De un país en llamas and La canción de Juan Perro). While the first two explored various influences found in contemporary European music, especially Anglo-Saxon, the group gradually set out on a path towards Latin roots and musical structures, which led to La canción de Juan Perro, one of the founding albums of what came to be known as Latin rock. The early 1990s brought their final two albums (Veneno en la piel and Tierra para bailar), before they disbanded in 1992.

Although the original line-up included Herminio Molero (composer and synthesisers) and Javier Pérez-Grueso (known artistically as Javier Furia; electronic percussion and vocals), both soon left the group. From then on, the members were the brothers Santiago (vocals, guitar) and Luis Auserón (bass), along with Enrique Sierra (lead guitar). Carlos (Solrac) Velázquez, on drums, was later replaced.

The influence of Radio Futura as forerunners of Latin rock and, more broadly, as one of the most important rock groups in the history of Spanish music, has been felt since their disbandment. They were considered the best Spanish group of the 1980s by various radio stations and specialist magazines, and in 2004 were named the "best Spanish group of the last 25 years" by listeners of Radio Nacional de España (Radio 3). In 2006, in a poll of 156 musicians, Rolling Stone magazine included seven of their songs among the 200 best Spanish pop-rock songs, the only group to reach that number.

In 2012, the journalist and music critic Jesús Ordovás described them as "the most important and influential rock group in the recent history of Spanish pop music". On other occasions, Radio Futura has been referred to as the "creative peak of the Movida".

The three key members of the group went on to pursue solo careers after it. Santiago Auserón is known by the stage name Juan Perro.
