About — The artist

Sylvia Jane Kirby (born 9 December 1956), known professionally as Sylvia, is an American singer, songwriter and life coach. In the 1980s she had 11 songs in the top ten of the US country charts, including "Nobody" (1982), which also reached the pop charts worldwide.

She signed with RCA Records in 1979 and worked with producer Tom Collins, who produced her debut album, Drifter (1981). The record yielded four top ten country songs, including the title track and "The Matador". Her second album, Just Sylvia (1982), sold almost one million copies in both the United States and Canada, and included "Nobody" and the top ten hit "Like Nothing Ever Happened". Snapshot (1983) gave three more hit singles, including the title song, which was also Sylvia's second music video. After the less successful Surprise (1984), Brent Maher produced One Step Closer (1985), which included three top ten singles, among them a version of "Cry Just a Little Bit".

After years of touring, Sylvia took a career break and explored songwriting with musician John Mock, who helped her create her 1996 album The Real Story, released on her own label, Red Pony Records. During this period she also became a life coach, helping clients make personal and professional decisions. In 2002 she released two albums on Red Pony: Where in the World (cover versions) and A Cradle in Bethlehem (a Christmas project). In 2016 she returned with It's All in the Family, inspired by her childhood, which was followed by two studio albums since 2022.
