Kahil El'Zabar Ethnic Heritage Ensemble

Kahil El'Zabar at BIKO

Kahil El'Zabar is one of the most profound and far-sighted artists of the renowned Chicago music scene, and is today regarded as a living legend of jazz.

Active in many creative contexts as a member of the innovative AACM, El'Zabar founded the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble in 1974, with the aim of further exploring the connections between African American music, such as jazz, and the most traditional African instruments and rhythms. Thanks to frequent tours in Europe and the United States, the ensemble has earned a worldwide reputation.

The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble comprises trumpeter Corey Wilkes, saxophonist Alex Harding, cellist Ishmael Ali, and Kahil El'Zabar on drums, hand percussion, kalimba and soul vocals.

In 2024 the Ensemble celebrated its 50th anniversary with the acclaimed album Open Me, A Higher Counsciousness of Sound and Spirit (SpiritMuse Records) and with a world tour that for two years has taken these fantastic musicians to every corner of the planet.
