"Aliments que van venir d'Amèrica"

A proposal from the Museu d'Història de Catalunya in which participants devise medieval and early modern meals using the foods available in each period, and discover how American products arrived in the European diet.

The proposal starts from a simple question: what foods were there in a medieval kitchen, and what could be bought in an 18th-century market? Participants devise meals from both periods using only the products available in each, which makes it possible to compare ingredients and dishes from one period to the other.

The central focus is discovering the impact that the arrival of products from America had on diet, by contrasting the menus of each period. The activity takes place at the Museu d'Història de Catalunya, a museum of Catalan history in Barcelona.

Thanks to its participatory approach, the proposal is useful for anyone who wants to put together historical menus and understand how diet changed with the introduction of new products.
