Overview

The Museo Sorolla reopens its doors to the public on 15 October 2026, after a lengthy process of extension and refurbishment, with the opening of the exhibition Tras la casa del artista. Arquitecturas del Museo Sorolla (1905-2026). An exhibition that invites visitors to discover the history of Joaquín Sorolla's house from its construction to the present day.

Curated by Covadonga Blasco Veganzones, the exhibition route includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, plans, letters and archive documents to show how the house conceived by the artist has been transformed over more than a century to become the museum it is today.

The exhibition begins with one of the most significant transformations of the house during the painter's lifetime: the opening of the large studio window, a gesture that symbolises the close relationship between architecture, light and artistic creation, which over time was walled up again. From there, the visit invites visitors to discover how the house has evolved and has been able to adapt to new needs.

Visitors can also learn more about the origins of the project and discover how Joaquín Sorolla created, together with the architect Enrique María Repullés y Vargas, a house that integrated family life, artistic work and social representation. Plans, drawings, correspondence and photographs make it possible to reconstruct this creative process.

The exhibition introduces visitors to the new spaces of the museum extension designed by the studio Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, in which light once again becomes the element that articulates the architecture: a courtyard evokes the Andalusian patio, and the rooms, lit from above through skylights, reinterpret the painter's former studios.
