Erik Truffaz & Antonio Lizana

The Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz and the Cadiz-born Antonio Lizana join forces on 12 November at the Conde Duque to present New Sketches of Spain, as part of the JAZZMADRID26 festival. Festival Internacional Jazz Madrid. The concert offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the album Miles Davis recorded between 1959 and 1960, anticipating the centenary of the legendary American musician.

When Miles Davis released Sketches of Spain in 1960, he produced a decisive work. Fascinated by Spanish folklore, the Holy Week processions and Maestro Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, the trumpeter opened jazz to new idioms. More than sixty years later, Erik Truffaz, one of the most restless figures on the European scene, known for mixing the trumpet with electronic beats and urban rhythms, takes up that legacy and, together with Antonio Lizana, a Cadiz-born saxophonist and cantaor who combines flamenco singing with the saxophone, turns that repertoire into a dialogue between their two styles.

For this date, the project is presented live in a special format that adds the bass clarinet of Renaud Gabriel Pion, the flamenco guitar of Pau Figueres and dance on stage by Sara Sanchéz. It is not a simple tribute to the past, but an open conversation between two musicians of very different backgrounds who share the same freedom on stage, bringing one of the most influential works in the history of jazz back into the present.
