Roberto Burle Marx

The Fundación Juan March presents, from 5 March to 13 June 2027, an exhibition centred on the figure and work of the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx (São Paulo, 1909–Rio de Janeiro, 1994), set within the context of international modernism and highlighting his standing as an interdisciplinary artist.

Organised and curated with the Zentrum Paul Klee, in collaboration with the Instituto Burle Marx and with the support of the Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, the exhibition aims to introduce visitors to the universe of an artist who, although he revolutionised twentieth-century landscape architecture and is widely recognised in academic and specialist circles, is little known to the European public. His pioneering concern for social and ecological issues also led him to take up the defence of the environment, a driving force in his work and his life.

The exhibition is made up of many of his landscape projects as case studies, documented through drawings, plans, scale models, photographs and audiovisual material, which reveal his working process and the scale of his interventions. It also includes a selection of his paintings, drawings, sculptures, azulejos, tapestries, jewellery and stage designs.

It is completed with works by international artists who influenced him and whom he admired, and with a selection from his collection of pre-Columbian ceramics, religious imagery and folk art, which are essential to understanding the cultural richness that surfaces in his gardens and landscapes.
