Una cita con Luis Escobar

The Cristóbal Portillo Exhibition Room, located in the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid (El Águila Complex), hosts the exhibition Una cita con Luis Escobar from 16 October to 21 February 2027, a documentary journey that revisits the career of one of the defining figures of Spanish performing arts in the post-war period.

Theatre director, playwright, impresario, translator and much-loved actor, Luis Escobar played a key role in helping Spanish theatre recover its artistic vocation after the Civil War. From his institutional position, he had no qualms about working with people of every ideology, and he used that position to stage modern plays from other countries, sidestepping censorship and opening the doors to everything happening beyond our borders.

The project brings together a carefully chosen selection of textual documents, manuscripts, original posters, periodicals and photographic material from his personal collection, held at the Regional Archive itself. Through this valuable documentary heritage, the visit reflects his close relationship with playwrights, set designers, filmmakers and artists of his time.

The exhibition also gives special attention to the most representative productions of his period at the helm of the Teatro María Guerrero, and to his forays into film and television, where his warm personality and particular sense of humour made him a face much loved by the public.

An ideal opportunity to discover the human and professional dimension of a multifaceted creator whose work renewed the contemporary stage.
