Jay-Jay Johanson

Jay-Jay Johanson at Razzmatazz 2

The first thing that strikes you is Jay-Jay Johanson's vocal presence. It is not a triumphant, emotive expressiveness but rather a restrained, fragile and unfinished one, something unusual in contemporary music. This vocal style, rooted in jazz, embraces fragility and emotional darkness. We find ourselves facing noir atmospheres that form the core of the work, not a mere embellishment. Whereas other artists use atmosphere as one more texture, Jay-Jay makes it the central theme. “Arsenic” sounds less like a collection of songs and more like a psychological state: claustrophobic, exhausted and introspective. It is steeped in a rich cinematic melancholy, free of irony.

Jay-Jay Johanson opens a door towards a new sound and towards a strand of electronic music that treats sadness as something to inhabit, rather than something to flee. Thus, although the DNA of this album comes from multiple sources, the feeling that “Arsenic” conveys is unprecedented. It does not announce a trend; instead, it quietly redefines how modern music might sound when it stops trying to impress and begins to confess. The release of “Arsenic” is scheduled for 5 March 2027.
