Overview
The Galician trio Sumrrá performs on 7 November at CentroCentro, as part of the official programme of JAZZMADRID, the International Jazz Festival of Madrid. Their concert brings together on stage one of the most stable and representative trios on the contemporary national jazz scene.
Formed in Santiago de Compostela in 2000, the band, made up of Manuel Gutiérrez on piano, Xacobe Martínez Antelo on double bass and L.A.R. Legido on drums, has built up a quarter of a century of uninterrupted activity while keeping its original line-up. Over these twenty-five years together, the group has established itself as one of the most stable projects in the Spanish jazz avant-garde, grounding its music in original compositions and in a collective approach in which all three instruments participate on an equal footing.
Their catalogue includes eight published albums, in which they have developed a way of playing based on flexible structures, the search for new acoustic sounds and constant improvisation in live performance. Beyond the national circuit, where they have taken part in landmark events such as the Festival de Jazz del San Juan Evangelista and the ImaxinaSons Festival, the trio has presented its music on tours and at international festivals in countries including Bolivia, Bulgaria and South Africa, including an appearance at the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz.
In their concert at CentroCentro, Sumrrá offers a journey through different stages of their repertoire. In live performance, the group reworks these pieces, letting the direction of the concert be shaped by improvisation, relying on the rhythmic role of the drums, the lines of the double bass and the developments of the acoustic piano.
