Overview
Chess is a musical presented at the Obie Theatre of The BRIT School in Croydon, built around a tense world chess championship set against the backdrop of the Cold War.
Chess is a musical that follows a world chess championship between an American and a Soviet player. The rivalry on the board is mirrored by the personal and political pressures on each side, and the story moves between the tournament hall and the players'private lives. The score combines pop-influenced songs with dramatic duets and ensemble numbers.
The show is staged at the Obie Theatre, the venue at The BRIT School in Croydon, which hosts concerts and shows. It is a sung drama with a full-length structure, so it suits those wanting a substantial evening of musical theatre rather than a lighter comedy or a dance piece.
