Kelela - New Avatar Live

A live show by Kelela, the American electronic and alternative R&B singer, built around the new album new avatar, at O2 Academy Brixton in London.

Kelela is an American electronic music and alternative R&B singer from Washington, D.C., active since 2011. The debut album Take Me Apart appeared on Warp in 2017, after the mixtape Cut 4 Me and the Hallucinogen EP. The album Raven and its remix companion RAVE:N followed after a long break, and the live album In The Blue Light documented another side of the act's work.

The new album, new avatar, is described by its promoter as built on the guitar, with songs that question how R&B and electronic music are classified and that link to a wider rethink of alternative, rock and indie production. Its themes, as listed in the source, include Black femme rage, joy as resistance, dystopian imagery, misogynoir and romantic tension. Kelela has said the music is meant to help listeners engage with what is happening in the world rather than distract them from it.

The concert is presented by dollop at O2 Academy Brixton, a London venue that hosts concerts and shows. It will suit listeners following Kelela's recent work and interested in contemporary electronic and R&B songwriting.
