Electronic music developed from studio experimentation and dance culture. House and techno emerged in Chicago and Detroit in the 1980s, and the genre has since spread into many live and club formats. In concert, electronic acts usually work with laptops, synthesisers and drum machines, shaping sound and rhythm on stage in real time.
