Overview
Rossini's comic opera The Barber of Seville, staged as a show at The Clapham Grand in London. It follows Count Almaviva and the barber Figaro through a comedy of disguise and romance.
Rossini's comic opera tells of Count Almaviva's efforts to win Rosina, a young woman closely guarded by her guardian, with the help of the resourceful barber Figaro. Adapted from Beaumarchais's comedy, the story turns on disguises, mistaken identities and rapid comic exchanges, all carried by the music.
The show takes place at The Clapham Grand, a London venue that hosts concerts and shows. The work belongs to opera buffa, the comic side of the operatic repertoire, and its humour comes as much from the score as from the plot.
Rossini's opera was first performed in Rome in 1816 and has remained one of the most widely performed works in the comic repertoire.
