Gil Scott-Heron by Brian Jackson & Yasiin Bey

A concert billed as Gil Scott-Heron by Brian Jackson & Yasiin Bey, presented at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It draws on the songbook of the late Gil Scott-Heron, a poet and musician whose work is associated with the soul and jazz-funk of the 1970s.

Brian Jackson is an American jazz and funk musician from Brooklyn, born in 1952, and active since 1971. His first album, Winter in America, was released in 1974. Jackson was the long-time musical partner of Gil Scott-Heron, the poet and singer whose songs this programme honours.

Yasiin Bey is an American musician and actor from Brooklyn, active since 1994, whose first album, Black on Both Sides, was released in 1999 on the Rawkus Records label. Yasiin Bey works in hip hop, soul and progressive hip-hop.

This show is a tribute built around Gil Scott-Heron's material, so the music performed is not by Gil Scott-Heron, who is the artist being honoured.

The Royal Albert Hall is a large concert and events venue in South Kensington, and the evening suits listeners interested in soul, jazz-funk and spoken-word poetry rooted in Gil Scott-Heron's catalogue.
