About — The artist

Doolittle is the second studio album by American alternative rock band Pixies, released on 17 April 1989 on 4AD. The album met with immediate critical acclaim and became the album that broke the band. It was especially well received in Europe, where British music weeklies Melody Maker and Sounds named it album of the year. The Pixies' principal songwriter and singer, Black Francis, wrote its distinctive lyrics, which evoke surreal imagery, biblical violence, and depictions of torture and death.

The album is praised for its “quiet/loud” dynamic, achieved through restrained verses built on Kim Deal's basslines and David Lovering's drumming, and peaks in tone and volume created by the addition of Francis's and Joey Santiago's distorted guitars. This technique influenced the development of grunge music in the early 1990s; Kurt Cobain stated that Doolittle was one of his favourite records and that its songs had strongly influenced Nirvana's “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

Upon release, Doolittle reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. It has continued to sell steadily since, and numerous music publications have ranked it among the best albums of the 1980s. The album's two singles, “Here Comes Your Man” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven”, charted on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States, while several album tracks, including “Debaser” and “Hey”, remain popular with critics and audiences alike.
