About — The artist
Kool and the Gang (also styled Kool & the Gang) is an American funk, disco, jazz, rhythm and blues and pop group formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964.
The band was first known as The Jazziacs when it formed, then changed its name several times over the following years, becoming successively The Monikers, Soul Town Review, The New Dimensions and Kool and the Flames, before settling on its final name in 1969.
A flagship group of the 1970s and 1980s, influencing various musical movements that followed, particularly rap and R'n'B, Kool and the Gang has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. Its best-known tracks include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebration (1980), Get Down on It (1981), Let's Go Dancin' (Ooh, La, La, La) (1982), Fresh (1984) and Cherish (1985).
