Overview
A Los Angeles evening at Echoplex pairing Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra with La Misa Negra, two acts working in ska and Colombian-rooted psychedelic cumbia.
Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra plays ska, a style that grew out of Jamaican rocksteady and was revived in Britain in the late 1970s by Two-Tone bands. The name points to a large ensemble built around its brass and offbeat rhythms.
La Misa Negra is a project rooted in Colombian music, blending cumbia with psychedelic rock and Afro-Colombian rhythms. Its sound draws on the dance traditions of the Colombian coast while adding the textures of rock guitar.
Echoplex is a Los Angeles venue hosting concerts and shows. The bill brings together two acts from different traditions, which makes it a fit for listeners who follow ska and Latin-rooted psychedelic sounds.
