Overview
A dance show by Sankai Juku, the Japanese company associated with butoh, presented at NYU Skirball in New York. Its title, TOTEM—Void and Height, names the themes of the work.
TOTEM—Void and Height is a dance production by Sankai Juku, a Japanese company whose work is rooted in butoh, a movement form that emphasizes controlled, deliberate bodies and images over narrative. The title points to its two central themes, void and height, which frame the movement and imagery of the piece.
The show is presented at NYU Skirball, which hosts concerts and shows in New York. As a dance performance, the evening is built on movement, staging and the body rather than dialogue, so it will appeal to audiences interested in contemporary dance and in Japanese performance traditions.
