Washington National Mall Mystery - Outdoor Exploration Game

A self-guided outdoor mystery game for players on foot across the National Mall, where a hidden time capsule and a string of puzzles tied to Washington, D.C.'s monuments drive the story.

The outing casts you as a investigator working a case. A Yale historian arrives in Washington with a lead on a time capsule said to be hidden on the Capitol grounds, and players must follow it. The route runs from the Capitol steps to the Lincoln Memorial, and along the way each stop presents a puzzle built into one of the monuments. The story follows Philip Reid, an enslaved man whose craftsmanship is tied to the Capitol dome, so the historical thread is part of the play.

Played through a smartphone app, the game is self-guided and can be paused and resumed at any point. The walk covers about 4 kilometers across twelve locations, and it is not wheelchair accessible. Because you work through the clues at your own pace, the outdoor setting turns the monuments into a large-scale escape room.

It suits families, groups of friends who enjoy competing over puzzles, and couples looking for a plan that combines a city walk with problem-solving. The starting point is a leisure venue on Columbus Monument Drive.
