Its name points to dark wave, a style that grew out of post-punk and new wave in the late 1970s and early 1980s, usually associated with brooding synthesizers, somber vocals and gothic-tinged atmospheres. Bands such as Bauhaus and The Cure are often cited as early reference points for the genre.
