Macbeth

Macbeth is an opera staged at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, drawing on Shakespeare's tragedy of ambition, prophecy and guilt. The production is presented as a visit to the Met's main stage.

Based on Shakespeare's play about a Scottish general whose ambition, spurred by a prophecy from three witches, leads him to murder his king and then to a spiral of paranoia and violence, this opera is a dark, dramatic work built on the strength of its vocal writing and its tragic arc. It is a sung drama, so the story is carried by the voices and the orchestra rather than by spoken dialogue, and audiences can expect the emotional weight of a grand tragedy.

The performance takes place on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House, the company's large house at Lincoln Center, which is devoted to opera and ballet productions with full orchestra and chorus. The setting suits those who want a traditional operatic evening, with the staging, lighting and costumes as the main visual elements of the production.

The show is aimed at opera lovers and at readers of Shakespeare who want to hear the story in a different form. Because it is a dark tragedy, it is better suited to adult audiences than to younger children.
