Madre Cumbia

Madre Cumbia is a world music concert at The Regent Theater in Los Angeles, bringing together four acts that draw on Colombian cumbia and related traditions.

Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto come from San Jacinto, in the Bolívar department of Colombia, and build their music around the gaita, a vertical flute, played alongside drums in the cumbia tradition. Fruko y sus Tesos is a Colombian tropical and salsa band, formed in the late 1960s, led by the bandleader known as Fruko.

Carmelo Torres and Madre Cumbia complete the bill. The lineup pairs a long-established Colombian group with the regional folk roots of the gaita ensembles, so the evening follows cumbia from its traditional forms to its later urban and salsa-influenced versions.

The Regent Theater hosts concerts and shows in Los Angeles. The program suits listeners who follow Colombian cumbia, gaita music and salsa, and who want to hear several styles from the same tradition in one night.
