Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens performs at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, presenting blues, country and folk music from an American singer, actress and author active since 2005.

Rhiannon Giddens is an American musician, actress and author whose work draws on old-time music, puirt à beul and folk. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Giddens has been active since 2005 and is a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, where Giddens served as lead singer, playing fiddle and banjo. That background in string band traditions runs through a catalog that moves between blues, country and folk, with an eclectic approach to older repertoire.

The Kings Theatre is a concert and show venue in Brooklyn, and this evening is aimed at listeners who follow roots music and folk-based songwriting. Giddens's pairing of fiddle and banjo with a lead vocal line is the core of the Carolina Chocolate Drops sound, which gives a clear sense of the instrumental focus this performance builds on.

The concert is part of several dates on this visit to New York, and the program is built around the blues, country and folk material that defines Giddens's work.
