Overview
A dance show that reworks Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker through hip-hop movement, presented at The National Theatre in Washington.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a dance show that reinterprets Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker through hip-hop movement. Where the original is danced in classical ballet technique, this production uses the vocabulary of hip-hop, transposing a familiar holiday story into a contemporary urban idiom.
Its story is the one audiences know from the classic ballet, so the pleasure lies in seeing a familiar plot rendered through street dance. The production is presented at The National Theatre in Washington, a venue that hosts concerts and shows in the city, and it suits dance audiences curious about how a classic title can be reworked in a different style.
